"No covers, got it. You sure you're going to be warm enough?" Jasper asked a bit worriedly. She murmured her assent and snuggled into her pillow. He made a note to get her a couple of stuffed animals. He thought she'd like them. Maybe a really big teddy bear. He'd ask Neila tomorrow what kind of things girls liked. She'd know. And maybe he'd get an answer of why she'd been acting so weird lately. She confused him. He kissed Penny's temple softly and smoothed her hair back, wishing her dreams of angels softly.
He sighed as he went back to his monstrosity of a bed, climbing into the soft sheets. Too soft. But it was for Penny. It was all for her. Everything he'd done from the moment he saw her to now had always been for this moment. To be able to look across the room and know she was there. Safe. Sleeping. He lay there a while, staring at her for so long that even when he fell asleep, she was there in his dreams, curled into a ball.
