A Plan Better On Paper

Jasper grimaced to himself. He just had to make up a story about parents dying, didn't he? Of all the idiotic things he'd done in his life, this was certainly in the Top Five. Penny already had a permanently defeated but stubborn look on her face, but that small moment revealed so much pain still. He had the urge to just embrace her and hold her in his arms, to say it was all going to okay, but he settled for taking a step to stand next to her. The money handed over, he placed a light hand on her shoulder to stop her from barreling from the room. He flipped open his cell phone and pressed the call key twice.

"Bring the car around, I've got her...No, there's no need for...that. Yes, I'm sure. Just do it." He sighed irritably and tried to smile at Penny reassuringly. "Come on, my flower," he whispered. He thanked the boss and started out of the office, careful to keep a firm but gentle hand on her at all times.
