Penny saw the boss turn towards her for any sign that this statement was untrue. The pain of losing a family was not one that Penny had to fake, merely one that needed to be brought to the surface. The boss sighed and headed toward the small safe where the money was kept. "I'm sorry for your loss."
Penny sighed inwardly quickly burying the pain that she found never quite went away. She glanced quickly at Jasper while turning around to receive her payment. He seemed slightly shocked and she wondered how much of that he had seen. That was probably the first time she had let her guards down since she had put them up. She had done it for him. The part of her that wanted to be near him was conflicting with the part of her that didn't want to trust anyone. She pushed those thoughts aside to take the money from her boss.
